Ixtapa House - LAR Fernando Romero
House. Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. 2001
The house is built on a private beach on the Pacific Ocean coastline. It was designed to spend days at the beach with a big family and to contemplate the extraordinary site. The traditional typology of Mexican beach-houses is structured by a number of wooden columns that carry a high palapa roof.
This allows the sea breeze to pass through the palapa and ventilate the space in this hot and humid climate. Just as in the traditional typology the living-area of this beach house is an open-air space in the shade of the roof. But since the client wanted a more closed and intimate space, the columns were replaced by two organic volumes that close off the direct view from the inland.
The house is accessed by a narrow entrance between these two supporting volumes. We proposed a living room that has continuous geometry in relation with the swimming pool; a space completely open to the sea view.
Here the classical structural tripartite floor-wall-ceiling is dissolved into one single gesture that embraces space. The unique landscape became an abstract image in the every-day life of the household.
